Acting Ranking Member Takano Applauds Senate for Passing Extension of Vital Veterans’ Programs, Protecting Student Veterans

Washington, D.C. – Today, Rep. Mark Takano (D-Calif.), Acting Ranking Member of the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, released the following statement after the Senate passed H.R.5985, the Department of Veterans’ Affairs Expiring Authorities Act of 2016.

“In passing this vital piece of legislation, Congress ensured that the programs and services America’s veterans rely on every day will continue without interruption. I applaud my colleagues on both sides of the aisle and in both chambers for making this a priority before the legislative session concludes.

“I am particularly gratified that the bill passed by the Senate today includes a provision to protect student veterans enrolled at a school that loses its accreditation. Without this desperately needed fix, thousands of veterans could have their GI Bill benefits – including their housing and food subsidies – abruptly cut off if the Department of Education stops recognizing their schools’ accreditation. Given the ongoing scrutiny into the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS), this issue demanded immediate action.

“The bipartisan legislation heading to the president’s desk will ensure veterans have access to the programs and services they need, and provide student veterans the flexibility they deserve to transition to a new school where they can attain a quality education. I applaud the Senate for passing this bill and encourage President Obama to promptly sign it into law.”
